Listen/Change

A New Hope Center offers two educational support groups for teenage girls and boys, CHANGE and LISTEN.

Participation in either program is usually mandated by Probation, referred by an agency such as Glove House Inc., or self-referred by the participant or a family member.

To successfully complete CHANGE or LISTEN, all participants must attend 16 classes, which are offered weekly.

CHANGE (Creating Harmony and Non-violence for Girls Everywhere) is a program for female youth that addresses violence, power and control in interpersonal relationships as well as in larger communities. Participants are given the opportunity to discuss topics such as oppression, gender roles, equality in relationships, issues of safety, and self-esteem.

CHANGE aims to empower young women through education, critical thinking, community building, self-esteem building and opportunities for self-expression. Classes meet on Mondays from 4-5 p.m. in the village of Owego.

LISTEN (Learn in Society to Encourage Non-violence) is a program for male youth that focuses on alternatives to violence, with an understanding of the desire to maintain power and control, as the root of many types of violence. Class discussion topics include oppression, equality in relationships, communication, gender roles and social norms.

LISTEN aims to empower young men through education, critical thinking, community building, self-esteem building and opportunities for self-expression. Classes meet on Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. in the village of Owego.
